The University of Miami was scheduled to open 87 years ago -- on the same day as the dreaded hurricane of 1926.

When time came to name the football team, some thought Hurricanes might be in poor taste.

A popular choice was Hibiscus. Gables founder George Merrick's parents were influenced by the name of Grover Cleveland's Cape Cod summer home, Gray Gables.

On their acreage they raised guavas so Althea Merrick was partial to the name Guavonia.

When we were regulars at the Orange Bowl watching the then-champion Miami Hurricanes play football and the crowd would cheer "Go Canes!" -- think how it would have been if Merrick's parents won out on their name choice. We could be screaming our undying support for the Fighting Hibiscus of Guavonia!
